Meet Bill McDermott: The Profitability Coach™

Bill McDermott graduated from Wake Forest University and launched a career in banking that spanned 32 years. He first started out as the “repo man” as part of Wachovia Bank’s management training program before locating to Atlanta to work for Peachtree Bank, which later became SunTrust. There, he distinguished himself as a great producer of loans and deposits for the bank, climbing the ranks to ultimately become a Group Vice President in the Commercial Banking division. In 2001, Bill’s group won the SunTrust Cup for being the highest performing commercial banking group in the company.

Over the next 8 years, Bill worked in community banking, becoming a top producer for IronStone Bank and later helping to double Embassy National Bank’s initial capital in loan production within 15 months. However, in early 2009 as the Great Recession was rapidly altering the economy, Bill’s position as Chief Commercial Lender was eliminated.

As Bill searched for what was “next”, he realized that he had a desire to share the treasure trove of knowledge of banking and financial acumen he had built. Bill combined his sales success from his banking/insurance experience with his deep financial/analytical skills and launched McDermott Financial Solutions in April 2009. His purpose quickly became “making business owners better financial managers”. Over the past 14 years, he has served over 200 clients by delivering results-oriented insights, helping to take them from financial confusion to financial clarity.

Bill currently sits on the board of directors for Pinnacle Bank. He also hosts a monthly podcast, ProfitSense, which features stories of successful business owners and the professionals that advise them. When Bill is not working, you can find him on the golf course, gardening, spending time with his family, and leading a small group at his local church.

Meet Peter Faser

Peter Faser has spent over 30 years assisting commercial, corporate, and investment banking clients successfully achieve their strategic goals by offering sound financial guidance and solutions. After graduating Washington and Lee University, Peter began his banking career at Trust Company Bank as part of their management-training program. At Trust Company, he managed a middle markets portfolio of commercial clients, successfully expanding his portfolio throughout the state of Georgia and was a team leader for junior bankers. 

Over the next 16 years, Peter led multiple teams in the depository space covering banks, credit unions, broker-dealers, and asset managers. As Group Head at Truist Securities, he and his team assisted over 2,000 clients across the United States in appropriate balance sheet structuring, creating efficiencies on the income statement, and providing capital solutions via senior debt, equity, M&A and debt capital markets advisory services.  

In 2017, Peter was looking for his next challenge and was asked by Truist Securities to leverage his in-depth knowledge of multiple industry verticals to spearhead a brand new deliverable focusing on financial wellness that would cater to existing corporate and investment banking clients across their national footprint. Over the next 7 years, thanks to his uniquely crafted collateral and creation of compelling content, Peter was able to grow this line of business from a concept to a portfolio of over 300 mid and large-cap companies. Along the way, Peter found his in-depth knowledge of financial statement analysis and deal structuring provided a path for his clients to ensure continued and future profitability.   

Peter is now very excited to be working with his former teammate, Bill McDermott, at The Profitability Coach where he can utilize his vast experience to increase business owner’s acumen on how to become better financial managers and strategically plan for their future. In his spare time, Peter enjoys teaching bankers through the Georgia Bankers Association on various topics related to lending and financial statement analysis. He also enjoys running, golf, actively participating in his church, and spending time with his wife and two children. 

Meet Marika Ponton

Combine a CPA’s in-depth accounting background, the outgoing personality of a business development professional, and an unwavering drive to help small business owners command their businesses to achieve growth or exit goals and you have Marika E. Ponton (MEP). These facets of her life are a culmination of the varied experiences gained over her professional career and are what makes her a true Secret Weapon! Born and raised in Nevada and after graduating California State University-Fresno, where she majored in accounting and rocked out in the marching band, she achieved her CPA license and started her public accounting career.

For the next 15 years, Marika earned technical expertise by auditing hundreds of public and private company financial statements and assessing their internal controls. That kind of exposure provided opportunity to gain experience with different techniques of financial analysis, management styles and structures, and insight into the challenges that come with running businesses. Marika saw where companies could improve systems and bottom-line profitability and she built lasting relationships with clients who trusted her input and professionalism in matters related to their sensitive information.

Always seen as an outlier in the auditing industry with her trademark outgoing Marika personality, she bridged the gap between external auditors and client teams that didn’t always feel comfortable sharing all the details of their financial statements. During one large audit, fraud in a client’s financial reporting was discovered which inspired her to obtain a Certified Fraud Examiner license. Marika then spent years performing forensic accounting engagements and participated in financial
fraud cases. Always independent and ready for new challenges and with the experience she gained digging into others books, Marika decided to try owning her own business. She bought a flooring company and grew it to a highly profitable location and was recognized as a top salesperson in the system.

Owning a small business proved to be significantly harder than being a CPA, which surprised her! Being adaptable and determined, and using creative resources helped her increase the value of the business for her profitable exit. She utilized Office.Angels for administrative and human resources support, and the flexibility that came from as-needed Virtual Professionals transformed the efficiency and operations of the location and now she leads and guides Office Angels’ continuing strategic mission to help small businesses flourish! It was a natural progression for Marika to become a Profitability Coach. She is able to analyze and assess financials and operations with an eye for Maximizing Efficiency and Profitability (MEP) and she thrives on being a Secret Weapon behind the scenes. She acts as liaison between clients and their financials and coaches others on how understanding them can help them achieve their goals!
